Project

Over the course of the summer, students will work on qualitative and quantitative research involving data that explores college student usage of open access resources versus purchased textbooks on student learning outcomes and perceptions. Students will work with IBM SPSS Statistics software to run various statistical tests. Students will have the opportunity to code open-ended and qualitative responses. Additionally, students will help to develop a manuscript for peer reviewed publication.

Student’s role

  1. Students will help to analyze student performance and a student perceptions survey that was given during the Spring 2024 semester while students were using a purchased textbook in their biology class.
  2. Students will help to analyze student performance and a student perceptions survey that was given during the Spring 2025 semester while students were using a free open access textbook in their biology class.
  3. I will teach the students how to use IBM SPSS Statistics software to run various tests to see if there are any correlations with student performance and preference when using the two different books.
  4. We will then begin to write the manuscript/article for a journal submission.
  5. We will work on creating a poster for the symposium.
